It as the only song that brought me some comfort on 9.11.01. So I listened to it that night and for days afterward. I didn’t completely understand it, but its comfort felt like an embrace, so I continued to listen. As I kept on listening to it, I came to understand it was telling me about just what I needed in that moment. It was one of the only songs to give me some hope during those heart wrenching days.
I did not know then as I do now, how many times I would need to hold on to this song and its message for the hope it brings.
- There is a balm in Gilead
- To make the wounded whole;
- There is a balm in Gilead
- To heal the sin-sick soul.
- Some times I feel discouraged,
- And think my work’s in vain,
- But then the Holy Spirit
- Revives my soul again.
- If you preach like Peter,
- If you can’t pray like Paul,
- You can tell the love of Jesus,
- And say He died for all.
